Episode 36: Metal as F*ck

0036 RockHello, dear listeners! This week, Windy and Melissa talk about ROCK MUSICALS! Because, clearly, we don’t talk about musicals enough!

If you’d like to drink along this week, well, you’ll need to BYOB, because we were drinking nothing but glorious water. We’d already killed a bottle of wine before the episode, and we were sleep deprived from the Minnesota Fringe Festival, so honestly, we couldn’t handle anything else. By the time you finish listening to the episode, I’m sure you’ll agree.

  1. I quote bits of Yellow Submarine so darned often… “I’ve got an ‘ole in me pocket!” “This is Beatleproof glass.” “Beatleproof? Nothing is Beatleproof!”

I’m 42 years old and I’ve never seen The Blues Brothers, though, and it seems like I really really should. Hmm.

Fun info about “Heavy Metal,” Blue Oyster Cult had one song in the film, a great tune called “Veteran of the Psychic Wars,” which had lyrics by author Michael Moorcock. But it’s pretty commonly known/believed that Blue Oyster Cult really wanted to provide the soundtrack for the film, or at least do several songs for it. Their album “Fire of Unknown Origin” has “Veteran…” but also includes a song called “Vengeance (The Pact)” that is blatantly the plot of the Taarna story from the film, “Sole Survivor” which has a vaguely sci-fi theme, and even a song called “Heavy Metal: The Black and Silver.”

“Jesus Christ Superstar” is clearly the best thing Andrew Lloyd Webber has ever done. A pedantic correction: Melissa said something about liking the guy from Deep Purple. However, Ian Gillan of Deep Purple played Jesus in the original cast recording but was not in the film. In the film, Jesus was played by Ted Neeley and I’ve always felt his singing was quite weak next to Ian Gillan.

    1. I once went to a Blue Öyster Cult concert with Kelvin Hatle and it was awesome.

Of course, Pedantic Eric, you are correct about the Jesuses. Sadly, I can’t blame my error on drunken exhaustion this time. I just own both soundtracks, and I get them swapped in my head.

Oh, and right near the end of the episode you mentioned Operation: Mindcrime. I’ve always wondered if it might make a good movie, but it may be the kind of story that seems much cooler told through music. It would be really easy for it to be heavy-handed on film.

        1. Agreed, but that shouldn’t stop someone from giving it a shot!

What happened to “Quadrophenia”? The Who made an iconic movie about Britain and the clash between the Mods and the Rockers and it’s not here?
