Episode 218: A Nickel Short of Quasimodo

Bad LieutenantThis week, dear listeners, we bring you an episode about Abel Ferrara’s 1992 movie Bad Lieutenant and Werner Herzog’s 2009 not-remake Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans! Why? Well, Windy hadn’t seen them before, and Melissa had a need to talk about inexplicable iguanas.

A special note about this episode: it was recorded over a year ago, on February 23rd, 2016. It is one of six episodes that we recorded early last year, which never got posted due to our later hiatus and subsequent posting schedule change. Thankfully, we were talking about movies that were already over five years old, so there aren’t too many stale references.

If you would like to drink along, we recommend either Two Gingers whiskey or New Glarus Staghorn Octoberfest beer.

  1. Oddly, considering how long ago this was recorded, only just this week I had my first Werner Herzog film experience. I watched this Internet documentary, “Lo and Behold.” It was… certainly nearly two hours of something I watched, that’s for sure. Some of it even had to do with the Internet!

    1. I haven’t seen Lo and Behold yet, so I don’t know how far Herzog dives into Herzog Artfilm Land, but his narrative films generally tend to be more conventional than his documentaries. That said, Salt and Fire is his most recent narrative film and it’s bonkers, and a lot of his other recent documentaries are pretty easy to digest.

Here’s a good starter pack of Herzog’s work:
      Grizzly Man (documentary)
Encounters at the End of the World (documentary)
      Fitzcarraldo (narrative)
Burden of Dreams (Les Blank’s documentary about the making of Fitzcarraldo)
My Best Fiend (the documentary Herzog made about his history working with Klaus Kinski)
