I streaming-rented Ant-Man on one of those “I should try to watch SOMEthing that came out this year” wild hair moments. (It was that or another movie I can’t remember, and I picked Ant-Man because it was shorter.) It had some great bits, and Michael Peña was a JOY (honestly, MVP of the film), but a lot of it bounced off of me. When the part of the movie which sticks with me most (other than Luis’ great “so my friend’s sister’s cousin’s boyfriend said” sequences) is the fight with the guy from a whole other movie, something isn’t gelling here. It wasn’t bad, I didn’t hate it, it just… didn’t grab me. Also, Hope Pym going from “no really, this guy’s an idiot” to smooching on Scott Lang was handled so… lazily. Meh. Assumed Intended Romance isn’t the same as actually properly building the (actually unnecessary) romance.
I meant to catch Straight Outta Compton, mainly on the strength of it featuring Aldis Hodge, who was a big part of why the Leverage TV show was so amazingly enjoyable. But, with the forced move to the suburbs early in the year upsetting my entire life’s apple cart, going-to-the-theater is one of the big things which got dropped from my lifestyle. I only barely managed to catch The Force Awakens in the theater, and before that we’d seen Avengers: Age of Ultron. That’s IT for our 2015 moviegoing. Oof. Streaming has taken the place of theater-going, and… while it’s great that it’s an option, the experience just ain’t the same. I’m in an apartment, I can’t really rig up the surround sound and play it at the levels some movies really deserve. Not and prevent angry visits from the property management, anyway.
Since I’ve got the place to myself this weekend, maybe I’ll queue up some stuff. Like, I still haven’t seen Fury Road… (I know, I KNOW!)
