  1. 2001: A Space Odyssey is the greatest film masterpiece that I never, ever want to slog through again… but yeah, I could probably be enticed by a proper 70mm projection experience of it.

Ah, Tony Todd. May his memory be a blessing.

    1. Just about anything projected in 70mm is worth a watch. My favorite of the 70mm prints that still float around is still Lawrence of Arabia, but that’s possibly only because I’ve still never seen the 70mm print of Tati’s Playtime.

The opening apes sequence of 2001 is reason in itself to see the 70mm print. It’s filmed with such scope of a vast space that it’s impossible to see tiny details on anything smaller than a big screen. But really, the whole experience is amazing, especially how the movie emphasizes silence, slowness, and vast spaces.

      1. I think my first experience with 70mm was at the Pacific Science Center’s IMAX theater in Seattle, watching Chronos. (Think of it as a proto-Koyaanisqatsi. But shorter, and with music by Michael Stearns instead of Philip Glass. I love it, and revisit it every year or so.) I was too young to properly appreciate the 70mm-ness at the time, of course. More’s the pity.

Lawrence of Arabia, though! That must be absolutely transcendent.
