  1. Another meta example (from BNAT history) is Le Magnifique, where Jean Paul Belmondo plays a writer of potboiler spy novels and we see what he’s writing play out, with the author as the dashing spy, his lovely neighbor as the love interest, and all the people he hates in his life (notably, his publisher) as the villains. And when his neighbor starts reading his books and clearly thinks the dashing spy is a ridiculous buffoon (albeit a highly entertaining one) and the books very enjoyable trash, he starts changing the book he’s writing to try and impress her and convince her that he’s a legitimate author. Everything that happens to him in real life becomes fodder for his book — even his plumbing and electricity troubles — and it’s all so deliciously absurd. It also has the most fantastic opening of all time, which you don’t realize at first is one of these fictional scenes playing out. Not many movies can open with a guy in a phone booth, underwater, being eaten by a shark.

    1. !!! I had nearly forgotten about Le Magnifique! Indeed, it should have been included in our episode. Now I need to watch it again…

  2. Oh! The Holy Mountain! There’s a big piece about that in that “The Story of Cinema: An Odyssey” series I slogged through. Man, that looked brain-meltingly bizarre. I can’t imagine actually watching it.

One exchange from The Muppet Movie became a key part of the lexicon between my children and I: “Bear left.” “Frog right.”

As for the Oxford Comma, I love the bit about Nelson Mandela’s tarnished reputation: “By train, plane and sedan chair, Peter Ustinov retraces a journey made by Mark Twain a century ago. The highlights of his global tour include encounters with Nelson Mandela, an 800-year-old demigod and a dildo collector.”

We’re not worthy! We’re not worthy!
